Stolen passport questions?

Here’s what you need to know about our expedited passport replacement services, government requirements, processing times, and other frequently asked questions.

If your passport is lost or stolen, you should report it immediately to the US Department of State by submitting Form DS-64 (Statement Regarding a Lost or Stolen Passport). This helps prevent identity theft and misuse of your passport. You should also apply for a replacement passport using Form DS-11 in person at a passport acceptance facility.

To replace a stolen passport, you’ll need:

    • A completed Form DS-11 (do not sign it until instructed by the acceptance agent).

    • Proof of US citizenship (e.g., birth certificate, naturalization certificate, or photocopy of your stolen passport).

    • A government-issued photo ID (e.g., driver’s license or state ID).

    • A passport photo that meets the US Department of State’s requirements.

    • Form DS-64 (Statement Regarding a Lost or Stolen Passport).

    • Payment for the applicable fees.

Yes, you will need to pay the full fee for a new passport, even if your stolen passport was still valid. This includes the application fee and the execution fee. Expedited service is available for an additional fee if you need the replacement quickly.

If you suspect your stolen passport is being used fraudulently, report it immediately to the US Department of State and local law enforcement. The Department of State will invalidate the stolen passport to prevent further misuse. You may also want to monitor your credit and personal information for signs of identity theft.

If your passport is stolen while you’re overseas, contact the nearest US embassy or consulate immediately. They can assist you in obtaining an emergency temporary passport to return to the US. You’ll need to provide proof of identity, citizenship, and a police report (if available). The embassy can also guide you through the replacement process.

If you don’t have a copy of your stolen passport or other proof of citizenship, you may need to provide secondary evidence, such as:

    • A delayed birth certificate (if born in the US).

    • A letter of no record from the vital records office.

    • Affidavits from close relatives or other documents (e.g., baptismal certificates, school records, or medical records) to establish your citizenship.
The process may take longer, so it’s best to keep copies of your passport and citizenship documents in a safe place.
