What is the difference between a passport book and a passport card?
- A passport book is valid for all international travel (air, land, and sea).
A passport card is only valid for land and sea travel between the US and Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda. It cannot be used for international air travel.
How long does it take to get a US passport?
- Routine processing takes 8-11 weeks.
- Expedited processing takes 5-7 weeks.
- For urgent travel within 14 days, you can schedule an appointment at a passport agency.

Can I renew my passport before it expires?
Yes, you can renew your passport at any time. However, some countries require your passport to be valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates, so it’s a good idea to renew it early if needed.
What if my passport is about to expire but I have an upcoming trip?
Check the entry requirements of the country you’re visiting. Many countries require at least 6 months of validity. If your passport doesn’t meet this requirement, renew it before your trip.
Can I use my passport as a form of ID for domestic flights?
A valid US passport is an acceptable form of identification for domestic flights within the United States.
What if I made a mistake on my passport application?
If you haven’t applied yet, you can correct the mistake. Contact the National Passport Information Center for guidance if you’ve already submitted it. Significant errors may require you to restart the application process.
Can I get a passport if I’m living abroad?
Yes, you can apply for a US passport at a US embassy or consulate if you’re living abroad. The process is similar to applying in the US, but fees and processing times may vary.
What if I’m a naturalized citizen and don’t have my naturalization certificate?
If you’ve lost your naturalization certificate, you must request a replacement from USCIS (Form N-565) before applying for a passport. A photocopy or notarized copy is not acceptable.
Can I apply for a passport if I’m on probation or parole?
It depends on the terms of your probation or parole. Some individuals may be restricted from obtaining a passport. Check with your probation or parole officer and the US Department of State for clarification.
What if I need to change my travel dates after applying for a passport?
If your travel dates change after applying, you can still use your passport as long as it’s valid. If you need the passport sooner, request expedited service or schedule an appointment at a passport agency.
Can I use a passport card for a cruise?
Yes, a passport card is valid for closed-loop cruises (cruises that begin and end at the same US port) and travel to Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea. However, a passport book is recommended for all international travel.
Can I get a refund if my passport application is denied?
No, application fees are non-refundable, even if your application is denied. However, the execution fee may be refundable in some cases. Check with the National Passport Information Center for details.
How many claims I can file?
You may file an unlimited number of claims. There’s a maximum annual claim limit amount of $5,000 per household and $2,000 per approved claim.

When I file an Via Home+ claim, what kind of replacement product will I receive?
If we are unable to repair your product and it needs to be replaced, you may get one of the following, at our discretion:
A new, refurbished, or remanufactured product of equal or similar features and functionality that performs to the factory specifications of the original covered product
Reimbursement for the product based on its replacement value, age, and condition.
